Every month, we have a Celebration Luncheon. Usually it is at noon on the last Friday of every month, so please check our newsletter or events calendar. After lunch, you have the option of watching a movie about a person with a disability that always leads to interesting conversation. Please RSVP to the DRC.
Every December, the DRC sponsors a Holiday Bazaar where you can buy and/or sell your arts and crafts. If you are interested in selling any items, contact the DRC.
The experiences of a little girl named Ashley Nicole Manes and her little sister, Allison were the inspiration to build a universally accessible playground so all children could play together. The playground is located across from Caswell park on Winona Street. A committee of local interested citizens created this project that DRC supports. They plan to continue adding on to this park. Please visit the playground website to learn how you can support this project.
Occurring every year in the month of October, National Disability Mentoring Day promotes career development for students and job-seekers with disabilities through job shadowing and hands-on career exploration, and raises awareness of disability issues both locally and nationally. With leadership, coordination and resource material from the disABILITY Resource Center and collaboration with other businesses and service providers, Disability Mentoring Day has proven to be a success in assisting people with disabilities in finding employment opportunities, and businesses in learning about a historically underutilized pool of talent. If you would like to participate, please call the DRC.
The Spirit of ADA Awards Celebration is a yearly event that honors individual members or groups who further the goal of empowering people with disabilities toward full community participation and inclusion. The event includes award presentations, dinner, and a silent auction that benefits the disABILITY Resource Center.
The Spirit of the ADA Awards honor individual members or groups who further the goal of empowering people with disabilities toward full community participation and inclusion. They demonstrate equal opportunity in employment, public accommodations, transportation, state and local government services, telecommunication, and other community activities. The award winners go above and beyond the civil rights protections afforded by the ADA in order to break down physical and attitudinal barriers faced by people with disabilities.
If you would like to place a nomination for any of these awards, please complete the nomination form and send to the attention of the Selection Committee at the DRC.
Every year, the disABILITY Resource Center sponsors the Walk, Rock & Roll event in honor of the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26. The Spirit of ADA Award Winners are recognized by the community and the Knoxville, TN City and Knox County Mayors provide Proclamations in support of the ADA. Knoxville service providers that cater to people with disabilities provide booths, crafts, and entertainment.
The walk consists of people with disabilities, family members and friends in support of the ADA. Individuals have the opportunity to navigate the walk using assistive technology, wheelchairs, guides, etc. Walkers can obtain sponsors to donate funds that benefit people with disabilities.
