Accessible Knoxville Restaurants

The disAbility Resource Center (dRC) partnered with the University of Tennessse College of Nursing to recognize "accessibility friendly" restaurants in and around Knoxville. Also, an interesting article about Access Knoxville was written by Knox News.

The overall survey rating reflects both the volunteer’s firsthand impression of the restaurant’s level of accessibility and the disABILITY Resource Center’s evaluation of accessibility features offered by the restaurant. The purpose of the survey is to evaluate each individual restaurant’s level of accessibility to people with all types of disabilities. The Access Knoxville survey has a standard rating system of Limited, Good, and Wow access. Therefore, if you have a specific accessibility need, please contact the restaurant directly to confirm that they will in fact be able to meet your needs.

Definition of Ratings:

Wow Access:
- Wow access means that the business is highly accessible to people with any type of disability. Thus, there are little to no obstacles to entering the business; the business provides adequate parking, if applicable; the business is easily navigable for people who use wheel chairs; the business is well lit; they offer Braille menus; there is little to no background noise; and the bathrooms in the business are highly accessible as well.
Good Access:
- Good access means that the business is access friendly. While it may not have as many accessible features as a “wow” business, overall the business is relatively accessible to people with most types of disabilities, though some barriers may exist. While a business that receives a “good” rating is still believed to provide an enjoyable experience to most people, if you have a specific need, you may still want to contact the business to ensure that they will be able to adequately accommodate you.
Limited Access:
- A limited access rating designates that a particular restaurant has significant barriers to accessibility. In the opinion of our volunteers and the dRC staff, the environment within the restaurant would make it difficult for some with accessibility needs to enjoy their experience at the restaurant, due to not being able to move freely, use the restrooms, or use a Braille menu, among other barriers.
